Even though Saturday, August 26 2023 was met with blistering temperatures, thanks to the numerous members of the community who attended and cheered on the participants, the Roller Derby Meets Fire Event was very successful for its first of hopefully many annual competitions. The community was treated to both Roller Derby and Firefighting Demos, consisting of Jammers trying to score through Blockers in derby and door pops and a dash lift by firefighters. The public had the opportunity to also try their hand at forceable entry on a door prop, fire extinguisher prop, spray a target with water and learn how mechanical advantages help in every day rescues, while kids enjoyed balloon twisting by Lilac from Crazy Balloon Delivery, ladder golf, and an obstacle course, among other games. The day culminated with the first annual Derby Meets Fire Relay Race, which saw Skippack Firefighters learn derby footwork and Bux-Mont Roller Derby league members learn to force a door, patient package, use the spreaders, and connect various size diameter hose together in order to spray water at a target. The teams were made up of both firefighters and derby members with the winning team, Coming in Hot, posting a relay time of 4 minutes and 27 seconds. Congrats!

This event would not have been such a success without some amazing partners. Brothers Kershner Brewing Company https://www.brotherskershner.com, from right here in Skippack, provided much needed beverages on such a hot day. Another local favorite, Babalouie BBQ, came in absolutely clutch with some delicious Ribs and Brisket dinners. While Cream and Ice Mobile Ice Cream Bar topped off the day with their sweet and delicious ice cream and water ice. Also, thank you to Auto Rescue Towing and Recovery of Limerick for providing the cars for the demos.
Thank you everyone for coming out and supporting us this year! |
